Injective and AltLayer Bring Restaking Security to EVM Applications

March 15, 2024

Injective is officially collaborating with AltLayer to create the first ever restaking security framework for on-chain inEVM applications. AltLayer and Injective Bring Fast Finality to inEVMRestaking based security aims to bring Ethereum security to inEVM and thereby applications built on inEVM. By doing so, inEVM can leverage the security of not only Injective but also Ethereum as a whole, bringing the security of over $400 Billion to inEVM. This is achieved via distinct validity modes: pessimistic mode, optimistic mode and validity proof mode. This setup assumes the existence of at least one honest node in the MACH network and network nodes are mostly in observation mode.

Injective is officially collaborating with AltLayer to create the first ever restaking security framework for on-chain inEVM applications. Starting now, inEVM can leverage the security of not only Injective but also Ethereum as a whole, bringing the security of over $400 Billion in assets to the world of inEVM.With this integration, inEVM is able to be more simultaneously Ethereum and Injective aligned than ever before, further merging two of the most vibrant L1 ecosystems to date.

Injective’s inEVM enables Ethereum developers to build applications that can uniquely leverage Injective’s blazing fast speeds and near zero fees while simultaneously achieving composability across the WASM and EVM world. In turn, this allows Injective to be the only L1 blockchain capable of unifying the interoperability of Cosmos with the speed of Solana and the developer access of Ethereum.

Together with AltLayer, Injective inEVM is introducing an entirely new design framework to bring to EVM transactions whereby on-chain state validation is carried out with a network of nodes with economic backing, which in turn ensures optimal security and reliability across the entire rollup stack.

What is AltLayer?

AltLayer stands at the forefront of rollup technology, offering a comprehensive suite of solutions designed to address the scalability challenges facing Web3 applications. Central to AltLayer's offerings is its novel product, 'restaked rollups', which supplement existing rollups with enhanced security, decentralization, and interoperability by leveraging the restaking mechanism.

AltLayer is backed by some of the largest institutions in the industry including Polychain Capital, Binance Labs and Jump Crypto.

AltLayer and Injective Bring Fast Finality to inEVM

Restaking based security aims to bring Ethereum security to inEVM and thereby applications built on inEVM.

This is achieved via AltLayer’s MACH framework via which a network of nodes is set up to perform state validation  for the inEVM stack. Upon any detection of an invalid state, a governance proposal will be initiated on-chain to react to the invalid state. If the proposal is approved, MACH's circuit breaker mechanism will automatically halt inEVM's RPC service, protecting users from further malicious operations and enabling them to initiate the process of recalling the transaction altogether.

By doing so, inEVM can leverage the security of not only Injective but also Ethereum as a whole, bringing the security of over $400 Billion to inEVM.

The Future of MACH: Lightning Fast Finality on inEVM

To accelerate the finality of rollups, AltLayer introduced MACH: a fast finality layer for Ethereum. In essence, the protocol is designed to provide faster finality to rollups by allowing operators to restake Ethereum-based assets to back any claims on the rollup state. AltLayer aims to bring the MACH protocol to inEVM in the future as well.

By bringing fast finality rollup services to inEVM, AltLayer and Injective together can empower developers and users alike to leverage the scalability and security benefits of MACH within the platform. This is achieved via distinct validity modes: pessimistic mode, optimistic mode and validity proof mode.

Pessimistic Mode

Within the pessimistic mode, each new state is considered invalid by default and therefore transactions leading to that state are re-executed. As a result, the inEVM operator feeds transaction data directly to the MACH network which in turn re-executes the transaction and reaches consensus on the validity of the proposed state by the operator.

Optimistic Mode

Optimistic Mode. Image provided by AltLayer.

In this mode, the rollup operator asserts a state claim on the MACH protocol, stating that the execution of a specific block of transactions leads to a particular state commitment.

Within this framework, any node in the MACH network can then challenge the claim and prove that the new state is not valid by engaging with the inEVM operator in a bisection protocol.

Optimistic Mode with ZK Proofs

A variation on the model above relies on the implementation of ZK Fault Proofs. This setup assumes the existence of at least one honest node in the MACH network and network nodes are mostly in observation mode. In theory, this model would replace the prior bisection protocol with on-demand ZK Proofs in which such proofs are generated in case of a challenge.

Validity Proof Mode

In the final mode of the MACH network acts as a decentralized verifier network for validity proofs. The rollup operator such as a sequencer will commit to a newly set of transactions, the resulting state, together with the validity proof on MACH. The MACH network will then verify and reach consensus on the validity of the proof.

Ethereum Restaked Security on inEVM

Ethereum Restaked Security is a major paradigm shift for inEVM and the world of crypto as a whole. For the first time in history, Ethereum’s $400 Billion network can be utilized to bring security enhancements to rollups built on Injective such as inEVM.

inEVM brings a groundbreaking infrastructure stack designed to hyperscale multi VM development. With inEVM, builders can create a legion of new applications that not only retain the highest performance standards but also directly composes across the IBC and Solana ecosystems over time. With a dedicated network of nodes validating inEVM states and on-chain alerts providing real-time notifications of potentially invalid states, users can transact with confidence on inEVM, knowing that their transactions are protected at all times.

Every single facet of inEVM has been custom built to meet the needs of sophisticated applications, including a hyper scalable execution layer as well as a modular DA layer. This combined with the near zero fees offered by Injective, makes inEVM the foremost solution for Ethereum native builders everywhere.
