The Technical Expert - Advanced Steering Technology is responsible for technical design leadership, validation and vehicle integration of safety critical electro-mechanical steering systems (System design, electronic design, mechanical design) into Ford Motor company vehicles including new product innovation such as Steer-by-Wire, Full Electric RCB and 48V Electric Power Steering.

In this position

The Technical Expert - Advanced Steering Technology is responsible for technical design leadership, validation and vehicle integration of safety critical electro-mechanical steering systems (System design, electronic design, mechanical design) into Ford Motor company vehicles including new product innovation such as Steer-by-Wire, Full Electric RCB and 48V Electric Power Steering.

  • Lead design, develop and validate Advanced Steering Systems through initial concept development to production design release including the Steer-by-Wire / Electric Power Steering human steering control interface(human-"robot" interface). Lead development with strong focus on BIC quality - Zero FSA.
  • Lead Advanced Steering Systems (Integrated System Products) specification development of overall system functionality, user experience, architecture, electrical hardware, sub-system function/control, communication, and electro-mechanical hardware.
  • Champion proper execution of Functional Safety(ISO-26262) deliverables at Ford & Supply base to ensure a safe system design and validation
  • Lead System and Sub-system Failure Mode and Safety analysis(DFMEA, Functional Safety) to ensure robust requirements, fault management strategies, design analysis, and validation across all disciplines(Electrical, Hardware, Software, Controls)
  • Lead Technical Design Reviews for advanced steering embedded system design, system/software functionality, electro-mechanical hardware reviews, and Fault management & Diagnostic strategies (Ford and Supplier). Focus on execution of BIC quality - Zero FSA.
  • Lead the creation of Advanced Steering System/architecture requirements, Advanced Steering sub-system requirements, and interfacing system requirements (e.g. ASIL D/B Power Supply, VCM , Powertrain, Brakes, ADAS, Wiring/EDS , etc) using rigorous requirement management tools.
  • Ensure appropriate validation of requirements which include vehicle, system, sub-system, mechanical, electrical, EMC including validation of interfaces with interfacing systems.
  • Define appropriate Vehicle Validation and Verification test plans for Advanced Steering technology to ensure vehicle safety and functionality. This includes Fault Insertion testing, Safety Strategy Validation (ISO-26262), functional validation, error state robustness, and system stability at the vehicle level.
  • Support HIL strategy and test case development
  • Define execution of steering system stability process for current EPAS and advanced steering technology.
  • Lead development of safety critical control strategies and robust calibration processes.
  • Define acceptable functionality criteria for EMC test plans for advanced steering technology.
  • Technical support for critical issue resolution for in-flight and new steering technologies.
  • Support mechatronics Technical Design Reviews for in-flight programs and new steering technologies.
  • Support advanced steering technology feature and SysML requirement modeling.
  • Collaborate with Steering Controls Motion+, ADAS, and L3 teams to deliver interface requirements and optimized functionality.
  • Qualifications

    Minimum Requirements:

  • BS Engineering- Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Engineering or strongly related.
  • 10+ years of safety critical Automotive design experience or related Industry experience, steering experience preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of steering technology and system design
  • Experience with strong supplier management of complex mechatronics embedded systems.
  • Technical depth in system functional design/specification, mechatronics, electronics, controls, software, system architecture and mechanical design
  • Advanced problem-solving skills.
  • Strong leadership skills, passion for quality, passion for customer - inherent self-starter with strong drive for results.
  • High technical aptitude
  • Demonstrated ability to forge productive relationships, achieve cooperation, and influence priorities of technical experts and other key partners.
  • Ability to manage/resolve simultaneous challenging complex technical issues.
  • Strong oral/written communication skills to lead group projects, issue resolution, and management reviews.
  • Experience applying Systems Engineering, Failure Mode Avoidance, and ISO-26262 to develop safety critical systems.
  • Experience with Steering/Vehicle Dynamics
  • Demonstrated Proficiency in engineering disciplines: DFMEA, Functional Safety, DVP&R, 8D, Process Control, PFMEA, and System Engineering Fundamentals
  • Experience with CAN Networks, ECU Calibration, CAN and ECU data logging including Canape/CANalyzer
  • Preferred Position Qualifications:

  • MS Engineering Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Engineering or strongly related
  • Experience with Electro-mechanical Embedded systems
  • Experience with ADAS Systems
  • Experience developing a safety critical product/new technology from initial development through launch
  • Knowledgeable in GPDS and GTDS
  • Experience with HIL Testing
  • Interface experience with Corporate Safety and Legal teams on safety critical systems.
  • Cross-functional knowledge of Power Supply and Brakes System design
