Job Description

As a Staff Cooling and Lubrication Systems Engineer, you will be at the forefront of driving innovation and excellence in the conceptualization, design, development, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing of the next generation of groundbreaking power units. In this position you will be responsible for defining the cooling and lubrication system key parameters by using a 1D Thermal Model and 1D Hydraulic model to define and/or control the required amount of lubricant being delivered to a wide variety of components such as Stator windings, Stator core, Rotor magnets, Gears, Bearing, differential, splines, busbars, etc. Your responsibility will go from a concept starting from a napkin sketch all the way to it being fully implemented and functional in a production vehicle, including working closely with the vehicle modelling team to define requirements for the Power unit, defining test plans, help with the system characterization and coordinating with Software team to make sure the right control strategy is implemented. We are seeking a talented and creative individual who is passionate about Powertrain engineering and development.

Responsibilities

What you'll be able to do:

  • Collaborate closely with Vehicle modelling group to define powertrain thermal and durability requirements and make sure such requirements are met.
  • Develop high fidelity models to accurately predict stator, rotor, and gearbox temperatures.
  • Develop hydraulic models to accurately predict and tune the oil flow split between multiple components inside the drive unit (Rotor, stator, gears, bearings, differential, splines, etc.)
  • Optimize the correlation between predicted and measured results by leveraging CFD and empirical test resources.
  • Directly responsible for sizing the Oil pump and developing the optimal control logic for it, taking in consideration the hydraulic circuit characteristics at different temperatures and operating conditions.
  • Responsible for sizing and defining potential bypass valves by leveraging the hydraulic model.
  • Propose and validate potential system improvements, collaborate closely with the design and release team to make sure such improvements are effectively implemented in the hardware.
  • Collaborate closely with Motor controls team to implement thermal related derates to maximize performance and improve durability in power units.
  • Develop real-time temperature estimation model that can be deployed on production vehicles for real-time motor control.
  • Contribute to design reviews, test plans, and requirements reviews to further optimize the powertrain system cross functionally.
  • Develop test and characterization plans for the Cooling and lubrication system.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation and reports related to the development work.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of design processes and methodologies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Collaborate closely with the Test engineers and subject matter experts to develop Test rigs and test plans to help validating the mechanical components.
  • Qualifications

    The minimum requirements we seek:

  • Bachelor's Degree in mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 6+ years of experience designing, developing, validating and releasing electric vehicle batteries, power electronics, or power units.
  • 3+ years of experience using simulation/modelling tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, GT-Suite and ANSYS or equivalent applications.
  • Experience with instrumentation and measurement of powertrain systems in a lab environment.
  • Strong sense of ownership.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong first principle understanding on Hydraulics and Heat Transfer.
  • An eagerness to work cross-functionally in a dynamic environment where you are part of a high performing team.
  • A system approach to design and development with the desire and curiosity to strive for exceptional delivery execution and continuous improvement.
  • Preferred Requirements :

  • M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience using 3D CAD software collaboratively (NX, CATIA, 3DX, Solid Works, etc.)
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Confluence, and Jira applications
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • What you'll receive in return:

As part of the Ford family, you'll enjoy excellent compensation and a comprehensive benefits package that includes generous PTO, retirement, savings and stock investment plans, incentive compensation and much more.
