Your Role and Responsibilities

As the Head of Content Strategy, you will report to the Head of Desktop Web and Content/Editorial Consumer Businesses. You will be responsible for overseeing and directing our daily news, features, and studio operations - including establishing the stories of the day, creating a compelling futures strategy, and driving content performance metrics through a strong understanding of analytics.

You will lead the way in establishing a strong, distinctive voice, stunning visual approaches, and new franchises across articles and video. In addition to content creation, you will oversee the audience engagement team, reaching audiences through push alerts, newsletters, and smart impactful programming across platforms. You will have a strong understanding of, and implement, best editorial SEO practices that drive content discovery. You'll work closely with the Content Product Lead and Social Team to ensure that our content is on point, relevant, and dynamic across platforms.

To succeed in this role, you will have a strong track record of managing video production and digital content businesses for major news and lifestyle brands. You'll have worked to develop on-air talent, as well as editorial talent behind the scenes. You'll bring impeccable news judgment, experience managing weather coverage in breaking news situations, and the vision to be a change agent. You'll have managed budgets and understand how to make compelling content that resonates with audiences and advertisers.

Working with cross-functional partners, you will lead content initiatives that tie into product, marketing, and revenue goals. The Head of Content Strategy will be expected to remain on top of market shifts, analytics, competitive approaches, and emerging technology to maintain our leadership position.

What you'll do:

  • Oversee daily news and features coverage - video, articles, audio, and other formats.
  • Manage the editorial team - including newsgathering, writers, producers, meteorologists, editors.
  • Oversee the audience engagement team, responsible for sending push alerts and site programming.
  • Oversee Spanish language team.
  • Identify and develop on-camera talent.
  • Establish overall voice and visual look and feel.
  • Create and execute on futures planning.
  • Identify and collaborate with third-party partners.
  • Develop new sponsorable franchises and specials to engage audiences.
  • Lead branded content studio initiatives.
  • Develop innovative storytelling approaches for emerging platforms.
  • Advance The Weather Channel's strategic and competitive position and deliver content recognized as best in the industry.
  • Manage and cultivate relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Establish shared vision, creating buy-in on priorities across the company.
  • Manage content metrics and reporting which includes reports and readouts to Senior Leadership.

    Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Minimum 15 years' experience in video and digital leadership roles for major news brand.
  • Experience in the Weather category.
  • Proven success managing large cross-functional digital editorial teams.
  • Hands-on video production, directing, and OC talent management experience.
  • Storytelling experience at the highest industry levels.
  • Budget and rights management.
  • Deep understanding of metrics to inform content planning and audience engagement.
  • Track record of branded/sponsored content development.
  • A self-starter mentality, solving problems and following up on commitments in a timely manner while also being a strong team player.
  • A strong willingness to experiment and take calculated risks.
  • Proven track record of successfully influencing a large organization to produce high quality results.
  • Excellent communication skills- be clear and accurate and be comfortable speaking in front of large groups.
  • Ability to deploy relentless initiative and demonstrate ownership in challenging situations.

    The compensation range and benefits for this position are based on a full-time schedule for a full calendar year. The salary will vary depending on your job- related skills, experience and location. Pay increment and frequency of pay will be in accordance with employment classification and applicable laws. For part time roles, your compensation and benefits will be adjusted to reflect your hours. Benefits may be pro-rated for those who start working during the calendar year.
