Your Role and Responsibilities

The Weather Company is looking for an innovative leader with a proven track record of successful project and platform delivery in the consumer space. The Head of Consumer Engineering will lead a dedicated team of software engineers responsible for our consumer website and mobile applications products and services across The Weather Company. Working in an Agile environment manages projects and coordinates outcomes with product management and design while leading the day-to-day development, testing and implementation of software that meets established specifications, business goals and objectives - on time and within budget. Specifically, he/she will be responsible for the full development lifecycle through application and platform engineering, security, compliance, accessibility, operations and quality assurance.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Providing leadership to the consumer engineering team, setting clear goals and OKRs, and driving the team's performance to deliver towards achieving business objectives.
  • Overseeing multifunctional teams including the development of web (frontend/backend), mobile applications (iOS and Android), DevOps and QA.
  • Providing exceptional management of budgets and timelines for various and multiple projects at the same time.
  • Leading consumer engineering strategy identifying market trends and electing where to make technology investments.
  • Building and leading a best-in-class engineering team hiring and retaining top level talent.
  • Ensures successful collaboration across teams and stakeholders
  • Directing the design, development, and maintenance of user-focused websites and mobile applications, ensuring seamless user experiences across platforms.
  • Practical mobile native application experience
  • Establishing and overseeing comprehensive quality assurance processes for all consumer-facing digital products.
  • Leading the QA team in designing and executing effective testing methodologies, including functional, performance, usability, integration and automation testing.
  • Setting and enforcing engineering best practices, coding standards, and architecture guidelines.
  • Ensuring that technologies and tools used are up-to-date, scalable, and aligned with industry trends.
  • Be a thought leader internally and in the industry on all areas of consumer software engineering with web and mobile development, QA, and DevOps.
  • Monitoring the performance and reliability of websites and mobile applications, identifying and addressing performance bottlenecks and technical issues.
  • Collaborating with teams to implement optimizations that enhance user experience and overall product quality.

The Weather Company, an IBM business, is seeking a Head of Consumer Engineering to join and lead a team of engineers focused on modernizing the consumer technology stack and building software and solutions to support digital platforms, like our weather.com and wunderground.com and our native apps The Weather Channel, Wunderground and Storm that touch hundreds of millions of customers monthly.

    Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • 10+ years of software experience in ad or marketing tech, consumer products.
  • 5+ years experience as a Head of Consumer Engineering teams or in a similar senior-level position in an engineering department
  • BS in Computer Science and related field or equivalent work experience (MS or PhD in Computer Science, etc)
  • Proven experience (5+ years) in managing web and mobile application development projects, preferably in a consumer-facing industry.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with a track record of building and motivating high-performing teams.
  • 7+ years experience working in an agile environment and familiarity with other development methodologies.
  • Proficiency in quality assurance processes, including testing methodologies and tools.
  • Extensive experience with cloud services technologies, in particular AWS.
  • Previous hands-on development experience in frontend and mobile technologies.
  • Good understanding of iOS (Swift), Android (Kotlin), Go, and JavaScript libraries and frameworks such as ReactJS, Angular, etc.
  • Strong organizational, planning, oral and written communication with the ability to present at the executive level
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced dynamic environment and to apply oneself in new problems in a dynamic lean startup way.
  • Exceptional ability and desire to learn new skills and tools.
  • Self-starter with an entrepreneurial mindset and creative, out-of-the-box conceptualizing skills, with ability to work within pragmatic boundaries

    The compensation range and benefits for this position are based on a full-time schedule for a full calendar year. The salary will vary depending on your job- related skills, experience and location. Pay increment and frequency of pay will be in accordance with employment classification and applicable laws. For part time roles, your compensation and benefits will be adjusted to reflect your hours. Benefits may be pro-rated for those who start working during the calendar year.
