Your Role and Responsibilities

IBM's Strategic Research groups at Albany Nanotech are currently seeking a software engineer in the area of design enablement for the world's most advanced semiconductor technologies. We are seeking qualified and motivated candidates for a position as a software engineer to maintain existing applications and potentially develop new ones.

The hired candidate will have experience with computer science or software engineering. The candidate must have a working knowledge of SOAP UIs, webservices, and scripting for Windows, Visual Basic, PERL, and Linux shells. They will have experience designing and maintaining file transfer programs and odbc/cli DB connections. The candidate will have a basic understanding of SSL/TLS protocol and have experience working with a Smalltalk server. The hired candidate must also possess strong analytical knowledge, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to articulate difficult concepts to an audience with diverse technical backgrounds.

The job responsibilities include working closely with semiconductor test structure designers, IT engineers, and layout technicians to scope and implement new features in existing software or collaborate with vendor engineers to request updates to off-the-shelf software. The position involves updating existing source code to maintain security compliance and support- level compliance. Engineers in this position engage with users of the software to understand their use cases and develop improvements for functionality or productivity. This position also entails collaborating with owners of other infrastructure tools and hardware that interact with this engineer's applications. The engineer in this position will be expected to make recommendations around development roadmaps' timeline + feasibility, evaluate alternative solutions as needed, drive execution and testing of new solutions. Close and frequent cooperation with development engineers from interdisciplinary teams will be required for this dynamic team environment.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Advanced experience with SOAP UIs, webservices, and scripting in a variety of languages (Windows, Visual Basic, PERL, and Linux shells)
  • Basic understanding of Linux administration + database technology (SQL / DB2)
  • Moderate understanding of Smalltalk servers, file transfer programs, and odbc/cli DB connections
  • Moderate experience sizing new software projects and leading design through implementation and validation
  • Ability to debug errors and solve problems in a team environment
